STOW -- A Columbiana man has been charged with robbery after he allegedly struck and injured a Kohl's store employee with a cell phone while allegedly shoplifting merchandise from the store on March 2.
According to Stow Municipal Court records, 39-year-old Brandon A. Phillips did not enter a plea to the felony charge and pleaded not guilty to fourth-degree misdemeanor criminal trespassing on March 2.
He was being held in Summit County Jail on a 10 percent of $50,000 bond as of March 9 and his case was sent to a Summit County grand jury via the court's direct indictment program that day.
According to a police report and court records, police responded to a report that Phillips took a video camera and an electric toothbrush totaling about $460 in value from the Kohl's department store at about 8:15 p.m. Police said that while being chased outside the store by a store employee, Phillips allegedly threw a cell phone, which struck the employee in the face, chipping a tooth.
Police said they arrested Phillips at a nearby restaurant a short time later and recovered the merchandise.
Police said the trespassing charge stemmed from Phillips previously being told not to enter any Kohl's stores.
